Referring your patients for Hypnotherapy
We all know how stretched resources can be and how little time medical professionals have to deal with the myriad of cases they are presented with, leading to their own stress, exhaustion and burn out.
Many patients return time and again for help with chronic pain, sleep issues, anxiety and stress. Yet it may be very difficult for medical professionals to support patients in the way that they would really like and there simply may not be anything else available in terms of medical intervention.
People’s perception of pain can vary hugely depending on their mindset, the context and their previous experiences. Medically their condition may not appear to support their level of reported pain, yet it is severely impacting the patient’s quality of life.
Those dealing with chronic pain often find the condition worsened by their worry about it. The stress and anxiety makes them tense which, in turn, makes the pain worse. Even though they’ve got over a previous condition, their past experiences can influence how they’re feeling now. They’re worried about it getting worse or recurring. It becomes part of their identity: they refer to themselves as an anxious person, an insomniac, a cancer survivor.
Hypnotherapy and N.L.P. can help people separate the pain, stress and anxiety from their identity. It can help people reduce pain, manage stress and lower anxiety. It can break the cycle of pain-anxiety-stress-pain by stopping the anticipation of pain, distracting the focus of attention on the pain and learning techniques such as how to temporarily dissociate from it, dial it down, ultimately reducing its impact and improving overall quality of life.
Hypnotherapy can also be incredibly helpful for patients wanting change but not able to implement it alone, such as smoking cessation, stopping or reducing alcohol consumption, weight management and tackling phobias, such as needles, dentists or hospitals.
How Hypnotherapy can help medical professionals
Patients who learn how to manage pain, reduce anxiety and lower stress will not need to visit the practice as often. They learn how to cope on their own for longer, with potentially less need for intervention or medication. This will impact the time medical professionals have available by reducing the number of repeat visits and therefore freeing up resources and reducing the load.
